How Does Sclerotherapy Work to Treat Spider Veins?

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of small amounts of a solution into spider veins to cause the veins to shrink and then shut down and be absorbed by the body. The solution irritates and destroys the inner lining of the blood vessel so that it ceases to carry blood to the area. Healthy blood vessels nearby will absorb the blood flow from the collapsed veins.

Very thin gauge needles are used and little if any discomfort is felt during the procedure. Sclerotherapy is a safe, non-invasive procedure with few significant risks. Once injected, the cells that line the wall of the vein become inflamed, irritated, and damaged. This is why the area will look worse before it looks better. Most patients will see a significant improvement in about 30 days.

The number of treatments needed varies from patient to patient depending on the type, size, and the number of veins that need to be treated. We typically begin with a complimentary screening and then one 30 minute session of sclerotherapy.

Patients will be advised to walk immediately after the treatment but should refrain from strenuous exercise for a day or two. Patients will be encouraged to wear compression stockings, usually for several weeks to aid in the healing process. After sclerotherapy, the area will need time to heal. Most patients achieve a 50 – 90% improvement after several treatments.
